What is an SSL Certificate & Why Do You Need One?

What is the difference between DV, OV and EV certificates?
DV (Domain Validated) only verifies you control the domain — issued in minutes, no company verification. OV (Organisation Validated) verifies your company's legal existence and domain — takes 1–3 days and shows your company name in the certificate. EV (Extended Validation) performs the most thorough legal and operational checks — takes 1–2 weeks but provides the highest level of trust. All three provide the same 256-bit encryption; the difference is the level of identity assurance.
Do I need a Wildcard or Multi-Domain certificate?
A Wildcard certificate (*.yourdomain.com) is best if you have multiple subdomains under one domain — e.g. www, mail, app, api, shop. A Multi-Domain (SAN) certificate is best if you have multiple different domain names — e.g. company.com, company.co.in, clientsite.com. Wildcard cannot cover multiple parent domains; Multi-Domain can cover up to 250 completely different domains. Both are far more cost-effective than buying individual certificates for each domain/subdomain.
What happens if my SSL certificate expires?
An expired SSL certificate causes browsers to show a full-page "Your connection is not private" warning — stopping visitors from reaching your site. This can cause significant loss of traffic, customer trust, and revenue.
